.
You are also to read "Democracy in America" come up with 5, reflective, reading questions. These questions should not be easily answered. Annotate this reading, talk back to the text. Ask questions as if you're arguing with de Tocqueville. Use the questions to push your own agenda...to frame your own argument.
Here's some guided reading questions for Tocqueville. These are not an assignment but are to help you delve into the text.
1) What is the 'absolute sovereignty of the majority'?
2)When he says the interest of the many are preferred to that of the few...what about the minority? what are their rights?
3)How does he reconcile #2 with his overall point that majority rule is a kind of despotism?
4) On page 52 Tocqueville suggests that dissension does not exists in America. Is this true? Was it ever true?
5) What is the 'tyranny of the majority'? What's de Tocqueville warning us about? Do we safe guards to protect us from this?
Here are the sample questions I showed you in class:
Here is some help with Feds 15:what does Hamilton think about the AofCs? Why does he think this? How are they an "embarrassment" to the new nation? Also check out the vlog I did a few years ago if you need some extra guidance.
. Check it out on YouTube for a link to Hamilton Mixtape in the description of the video.
PS the channel above only has feds 10 and 51 but you can also listen to all of them as Mp3s HERE Check around on this site...you may find some other useful things!
1/20 WELCOME BACK!!! A lot of AP info today:
Your first Exam will be over chapters 2-3 on 1/27...this is a full week from now
1/22 Today we took a closer at different kinds of federalism. Check out the powerpoint slides 14-17. This will include the journal and a class assignment. Make sure you check out the powerpoint in presentation mode so you can see the entire slide (on 17 there's animation that covers up the assignment instructions).
1/29 HAPPY KANSAS DAY!!! How did your exam go?! I hope well. Here is the assignment due tomorrow:
Read pages 167-174 about Political Socialization
What is Political Socialization? What are some agents of political socialization?
How does each shape the ideas of Americans?
Which has the most impact on young people? On older people? On you? Explain.
On Monday I expect you to to have read the excerpt of Democracy in America found on pages 3-6 of the reader. You will need to have answered the following questions:
What makes America unique?
What feature(s) create(s) unity in America?
What agents of political socialization does AdT identify in this selection?
Write two of your own questions.
Hello Brilliant Minds! Here is the study guide for chapter 5
2/3
Today we will be in the library!! We will work on this webquest
Complete the assignment on the word doc and email it to me (yay technology!!) DUE MONDAY BY 330...EMAILED PLEASE
Here is your homework for tonight:
Read pages 172-178 of the text. Make sure you understand the different methods of measuring public opinion and the issues with each. Take notes if you need to (if you have more than one page front and back you're writing too much) we will have a quiz on Thursday.
Read this article and answer the questions at the end
Now go to this site. scroll down until you see Read page 25 ("The Use and Misuse of Polls) through 26. Write a paragraph answering this question:What does the author believe is the role of the President? How do polls help in this capacity? Make an argumentin disagreement with theauthor Your paragraph should be AT LEAST 5-6 sentences.
(also see pdf above) Your homework over the weekend is to read pages 203-212 in the text. Take your own notes paying specific attention to the following:
How has Mass Media changed over the years? What has that meant for politicians, politics and the people?
Notice the major differences in the media sources. Are all created equal?
Take note of regulation (FCC) and deregulation in recent years.
How/why do people 'own' media? How does that effect the consumer of news?
Here are a few videos that can help illustrate the points made in the book. We may or may not watch these in class:
Murrow speech from Goodnight and Good luck
From Slate "MSNBC v Fox News"
"Media Effects"
2/9 Today we talked about the role of the media on politics. Your job tonight is to seek out news from three different sources (Fox, CNN, ABC, Slate, CJ Online) but all the same type of media (newspapers, magazines, radio, tv). Fill out the chart (found on the document) to the best of your ability
2/10 Homework tonight is to read "How the Mass Media Divide Us" 605-609 in the reader.
ID the author's thesis
Write 5 questions which ARGUE A DIFFERENT AND ANTITHETIC OPINION. Here are a few example questions
How important is civil discourse in the world of American politics? What about the free exchange of ideas? You say yourself " 'Shout-Shows' make for compelling television" This means the typical American is more likely to watch and, thus, pay attention to politics. In a country where more people can name the characters on The Simpsons than members of the Supreme Court...this is a win! Civil discourse be darned!!!
According to your study, Shout-Shows are entertaining and cause my "emotional level of arousal to increase" yet leaves me with "little understanding of the other side" of an argument. This may be so, but who cares? The point of politics is not to understand all sides of an argument. Does it necessarily strengthen my belief if it is one I hold with much conviction and after much contemplation? If I can have an argument with someone about my political ideals, hold my own and site specific reasons I'm right and you're wrong I am informed. I don't need to understand the other side. What's more, just because everyone has an opinion doesn't mean everyone's opinion is valid.
2/12 Today we did some FRQ practice and started a discussion of Minor Parties. You can find the notes we took on slide 38 of the powerpoint presentation
. Your HOMEWORK tonight is to read the short section at the text about Minor Parties (270 through 271) and this article. You will notice in the article there are a few third parties mentioned. Choose one of the parties mentioned (third party that is), go to their (official) party website and answer the questions on the document.
Your homework over the weekend is to read the first section of chapter 8 (283-296). Take notes if you wish. You may use them on the quiz we will have on Tuesday. As you read consider the following:
What are the rules, processes, procedures for elections? How do they differ in congressional and presidential elections?
Primaries
Gen. Elections
Nomination
National convention (presidential)
Not the difference between a nationalized and normal election.
Who votes and how?
Who wins and how?
Winner-take-all
single member districts
electoral v popular votes
You will also need to read this article. Consider what the authors of your book say about incumbency and specifically the "accountability factor"; does the article agree with this point of view? Write a 5-6 sentence response and email me by 11:59pm Sunday
2/23 Today we talked a little about how candidates for political office, and especially POTUS, gets noticed among the voters. Focus on slides 45-47
Tonight I would like for you to read 304-312. I have included some focus questions below. You will have a quiz on Thursday which will cover info from this reading and any other reading from the week AND the reading above (from 2/13):
What is the nature of campaign advertising? What affects do ads have on voters?
What is the role of the FEC (note the mention of your second micro-theme topic here)?
What restrictions are placed on certain groups when giving money (hard/soft) to candidates, parties, campaigns, etc?
We also watched this clip to get us going Here are the focus questions for "Going Dirty" 506-514. Please make sure you are answering these questions thoroughly, completely and responsibly. I should be able to tell that you did the reading through your answers. In short, if this assignment takes you 10 mins and you hand in a half a page of work...YOU MISSED SOMETHING!
At the beginning of the essay, Mark makes the distinction between "negative campaigning and dirty tricks." What's the distinction and why si this distinction important?
According to Mark, is there value in negative campaign advertising? Would you agree with Mark here? Explain.
How has the internet changed campaign advertising?
The essay implies that negative ads get the most attention but that most of them do not come from a candidate or party. What does this say about how much control a candidate has over the ads in his/her favor? Is this good or bad for the democratic process? Explain.
What, according to the author, is the overall effect negative campaign advertising has on elections and voter behavior? Do you agree with David Mark? Explain
2/26 through the weekend... Here is the House v Senate activity in full
. We will finish that today (2/27) Your reading for over the weekend is a long one (are there snow days in our future???!!!). Here are your guided reading questions. I would suggest answering these instead of trying to take notes on all of it (313-331)
What is the voting paradox? Regardless, what groups of people seem to vote at the highest numbers?
How do Issue Voters differ from those who use voting cues to inform to inform their vote? Which cue is the strongest among voters who use them? Which cue would you say shows the greatest amount of political awareness? Why?
Use the terms coattails, split ticket and straightticket to explain the author's claim that "in the main, presidential and congressional elections are made independently of each other."
What is a nationalized election? Why do they occur and why are they rare? Do you think these elections create a more educated electorate? A more accountable Congress/President? Explain.
What were some "distinguishing" characteristics of the 2008 elections? How and why did the government become so divided after the mid-term election in 2010?
What were the salient issues coming into the 2012 election? How did the GOP and the Democrats stack up to each other over these issues (don't just say 'the GOP did good with the people over Obamacare...' explain)? What issues, which had once held sway with voters, seemed to become less important in 2012? Which issues were most important in winning the races (presidential and congressional)?
In the end, what seemed to be the biggest factor in the victories and losses in the 2012 elections. Explain your answers.

4/6 Here is the budget reading from Friday. I asked you to prepare a simple flow chart in the space at the top of the reading.
4/7 Please finish your work with McCulloch v Maryland and read essay #47. Answer the following in complete sentences and fully fleshed out responses. If you give me vague, thoughtless answers you will be doing the assignment again...
The author says SCOTUS rules to interpret “Constitutional values” not to interpret “Constitutional language.” Explain the difference? What is an example of this?
SCOTUS are meant to judge cases apolitically. The author of this essay posits that this is not entirely possible. Identify and explain at least two ways mentioned in the essay that justices can pursue an agenda during their time on the bench
Alexander Bickel (Constitutional scholar) called the landmark Roe v Wade decision a case of “counter-majoritarianism”. What is countermajoritarianism? Why does the author say this is a serious issue? What does this have to do with judicial review?
The author contends that there are two issues with “originalism”; explain these issues
One adjudication theory claims justices should seek out the ‘moral rights’ in the Constitution; explain the criticism of this theory. What is your opinion on the matter?
